The title quoted by my mother is something she mentioned every time we moved houses.

 After 28 years of living in the UAE, I am moving out for the first time, going to be living aboard for the first time. This positioning raised a few weird feelings, one primarily about the idea of home and the house as an object. I had a precarious life growing up, things were never stable and home was always something in flux, which bothered me.

For the show, home was something I thought about a lot. I drove by our first house, thinking about all the tension and memories embedded on those floors. Thinking about someday that house will be demolished and only rubble will remain.

 There are a lot of sandlots around this neighbourhood, and within the sandlots there is rubble. Houses past and discards of excess construction material all live in this lot and I collected them. After twenty white tiles, I finally find several with distinct characters, a particular choice that only a few can be questioned on.

 In my professions, I worked with artists who worked with mobiles and I’ve guarded museums with mobiles. This is where I thought a mobile would be a good representation of this feeling I am experiencing.

 to have beginnings and ends, floating in the present.

 Martin Heidegger looks at dwelling as an accommodation between people and their surroundings and that man should do three things; building, dwelling, thinking.

 This got me thinking about my practice and what I do. In which this is where “Looking, dwelling, leaving” came from, My solo at the third line.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

 “To dwell, to be set at peace, means to remain at peace within the free, the preserve, the free sphere that safeguards each thing in its nature. The fundamental character of dwelling is this sparing and preserving. It pervades dwelling in its whole range. That range reveals itself to us as soon as we reflect that human being consists in dwelling and, indeed, dwelling in the sense of the stay of mortals on the earth.”

 Looking is a work fixated on language and drive. While grocery shopping I find myself looking at notice boards of the supermarket, not with any intention other than to simply gauge what people put out public domain.

Upon looking at the boards, I found a pattern in the language of job seeker advertisements, all of them mentioned they were not “seeking”, not “interested”, not “searching” but “looking” and I found myself connected with this stranger's plea. To stay in the UAE for most third world citizens meant to be under an employment visa, I too understand this state of needing employment but also a chance to stay, to linger.&#38;nbsp; I found a moment where I and this stranger shared the same method of survival, which is to look for something to continue existing.

Still somehow in circulation for a dollar.

 I have been thinking about postcards, I’ve collected a few written with pencil and found it insane one&#38;nbsp;would write a postcard with a pencil. If the graphite would hold itself without being smudged on its way to the recipient.

 I found a seller on Ebay&#38;nbsp;who sold American used postcards, curiously I messaged him if he had any written with a pencil. I received 21 postcards in the mail, fascinated by the quality of scripture. Something I cherish, a human's distinct imprint, hard to replicate.

 As growing up in the UAE, history as a concept is hard for me to grasp. There is a distance between being able to comprehend time. But I was fascinated to be able to touch the grains of a pencil from 1908 to smudge it with my town hands, to alter micro history.

 Smudging was harder than I thought, the texts were generic, and I had no interest in the images. So I decided to erase the texts and turn them into something else.

 One day, while walking to work&#38;nbsp;I found a pair of keys on a ledge, I&#38;nbsp;waited a few days to give the owner the chance to collect his belongings. On the fifth day, my impatience grew stronger, on&#38;nbsp;a lunch&#38;nbsp;break&#38;nbsp;I took the keys to&#38;nbsp;a key&#38;nbsp;shop and made myself a copy.

 After placing the key back, the next day&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;original was finally gone.

 Now the&#38;nbsp;game has begun. I have something to look forward to, my eyes always on the floors and the crevices of the city.&#38;nbsp;Collecting&#38;nbsp;keys and making copies of them.

 As an artist I&#38;nbsp;felt,&#38;nbsp;that&#38;nbsp;copying the keys wasn't laborious enough. I remained stuck with my copies.

 Until working with an artist at work, when she introduced a foreign object into her practice&#38;nbsp;she would use fabric and weave her mother's native Caribbean craft onto this object&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;I&#38;nbsp;watched a type of mending happen between the artist and this object.

 So I took my keys and spent hours on YouTube learning various keychain knots,&#38;nbsp;to assert some care, to mend my distance with these objects.

Using an industrial key box, I hung all these keys,&#38;nbsp;almost treating it like a shrine.&#38;nbsp;The box had a sheet of paper to help identify the keys, and on&#38;nbsp;it, I listed&#38;nbsp;out&#38;nbsp;their potential.

 This work most definitely nodes to all the Palestinians and Palestinian artists who highlighted how significant a key is.

One day I&#38;nbsp;walking&#38;nbsp;down a busy street and found this card under my nose.&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;Usually&#38;nbsp;in the&#38;nbsp;UAE&#38;nbsp;if there’s a card on the floor, it’s most likely for prostitution. Though this card stood out, I thought some creative agency attempted to make something interesting.

 “ALONE” and a phone number is&#38;nbsp;so powerful, is this a statement? a question?, a person?.

Am I alone? lonely?

 The curiosity proceeds with a WhatsApp conversation and the conclusion is not so productive. Nevertheless, I like to share my experiences with the city, whether the outcome is something&#38;nbsp;fruitful for a practice or not. For the work, the custom-made frame that is handpainted nodes to a floor I saw, interlocks bricks have been covered over by cement and then once more and then someone cracked it open to reveal the bricks.

 I felt that was a beautiful visual metaphor for what I do in my practice and&#38;nbsp;in&#38;nbsp;the city.

I am nosey about people's lives, and from this one relic of their day, I learn so much about their behaviors, spending, and taste. I'm trying to do something else here, with receipts from my experiences.

Previously I would recreate receipts by drawing them and subtly switching out characters, trying to make this automated fact into fiction. Here in order notes I try to have both, slipping poetry into my food orders.

A letter to the gallery:&#38;nbsp;

16 April 2023

To my fellow guests of the gallery,

Firstly I'd like to introduce myself; legally, my name is Mohamed Khalid, but I go by
Khalid.

I would describe the work in my practice as findings, but I am making these
findings. Sometimes the works are my thoughts, and sometimes they are an
exercise. As an artist making/finding work is a game for me.

A game that gives me a sense of purpose every day, and I look forward to it. I
produce work that gives me a reason to look forward to the next day.

You will find this text on the wall and a printer in the space. Indeed as time
passed, a few images too.

Up until the 16th of April 2023. I have two thousand one hundred and forty-one
images of the sunset. Experiencing and documenting the evening has been this
anchor in my day. When I wasn't employed at a full-time job, regardless of what I
did with my day. If I experienced a sunset, at least there was one routine task in my
life.

For the duration of this exhibition, I will make the sunset a routine task.

For the upcoming weeks, during sunset time, I will be experiencing the sunset and
documenting it. An image of it will be sent to print, showing proof in the space that I
am fulfilling the task.

The gallery employees will mount these images on the wall once the sun has set.

One day in the basement of my office, I found a rose in a bottle, quietly it lived there, in a zulal bottle. It was quietly extending its gesture of love.
Two weeks later, it’s no longer there. So I’ve been collecting the same water bottles I consume every day at work and on my weekend, I buy a bunch of roses, carry sugar with warm water, drive around and recreate this gesture.
In random places and places, I could express love publicly.Found object, recreated found
object, office water bottles, sugar,
warm water, roses

		<description>Agua Viva 🏊‍♂️

I draw from real-life episodes of missed communication: or more precisely an understanding of the systems that combine to form communication. In Agua Viva I took my encounter with a jellyfish and investigated the creature's circulation to the sea I faced.
When you translate Agua Viva from Spanish, it translates to “Living water” or even “Water life” but in Portuguese, Agua Viva translates to “Jellyfish”

“Thank you” is a diptych featuring two letters. One letter is from my building security guard, who couldn’t have a word with me but instead decides to eloquently transcribe a warning for my bad parking

behaviour. Fascinated by his handwriting I hold the paper precious and found myself struggling to replicate his intricate A’s. The papers are hand-drawn, hand-torn, carbon paper pressings of mine and his words. From a beautiful colloquial english to a doctors handwriting english. Neither notes reach their destination but instead float on this blue notice board in reference to 17th century painters who used blue to depict, distance.

I see street cats as fellow flauners, there is a state of precariousness, seeking of unconditionality and loneliness that evokes every-time I interact with them. The drawing is worked off an image from our encounter and paired with text.

This is also a self portrait, multiple faces, different locations, all seeking the same thing.

I am now employed full-time, and I also was promised a solo, and now I am expected to work twice. If eight hours of my day is now compromised, I must devise a formula to produce ‘work’ during work hours. Something easy, something thoughtful.

I can’t draw. That takes too long and requires space.

I’ve been working on a lot of texts at work. I decided I’ll write texts for the show. I also found these cyanotype fabrics at the art supply store.

Thats it. During my lunch break, I clock in, open the office computer, type a text, print it using the office printer, and expose it to the sun.

On August 13th, 2019 I took a bus from Venice, Italy to Nice, France.

To get there, I had to take a Vaporetto (Water bus) and get on a bus, a FlixBus traveling from the Northwest of Italy towards the Southeast of France. It was beautiful. My friend picked me up and, over the weekend, I bathed in French-Swiss water, fell in love with green tomatoes (yes, green tomatoes), they tasted like apples and walked around the countryside.

On Thursday morning, I got on the bus. Halfway through the journey, the bus driver commanded an hour break in an Italian city called Genoa. First, he says: “le cinque e un quarto, si parte” and then in English:“quarter past 5, we leave”.

Tired, I walked around Genoa. Keeping track of the time, I arrived next to the bus at 5:00 PM. The people on the bus were all seated outside, so I sat with them. I started to video chat with my friend, showing him around and I noticed in my background, that the bus was leaving... Ending the call, I ran behind the bus. The bus continued its journey and all I could think of was my luggage inside that bus. I booked another bus that would arrive 40 minutes later, and reach Venice an hour after my initial bus did.

Upon arrival, I anxiously typed on Google translate:

“Hi, I was on a bus to Venice and we stopped in Genoa and then it left without me. My luggage is still inside and it arrived here in Venice an hour ago, could you please help me find it? Do you have the contact of the previous driver? Please?”

The kind gentleman tried calling the head office but it turned out that like Uber drivers, FlixBus hires people on a freelance basis. They are given the shirt to drive the bus and there’s no proper log to account who was the driver at the time.

Upset, I took a sad boat ride to the island, and had a sad walk back home, with slight ease as I didn't have to drag a suitcase across Venetian brick floors.

I emailed the company, filed a complaint, and received a response 14 days later.

2 years, 8 months, and 11 days later, I walk into my neighborhood thrift store and find not my luggage, but the uniform the FlixBus drivers wear while on the job. My luggage is still missing and now in my possession is a bizarre relic of this experience.

I wonder if this was the shirt that belonged to the driver who drove us for 10 hours.Found uniform, stains, missing luggage, re-make suitcase, postcards, re-make genoa bus stop, photo banner

In second grade, I had a teacher named Mrs Sima, who is remembered as the person who made me switch from left-handed to right-handed.&#38;nbsp;
I don’t think she thought much about it, other than that we use our right hands, not our left. I don’t think she knew it would cause dyslexia either..
I decided to write to Mrs. Sima, only using my left hand, confronting her actions, and somewhere being my journal.

Return the slab is a sad story that keeps getting worse, troubled with conspicuous consumption I bought a bag from an online service, only to receive the wrong bag. I returned the bag only to have them tell me I returned the wrong bag.. I took my frustration onto this slab, etching my email complaint to the company to produce a monolithic piece declaring my hate to this purchase.
 Later the slab beautiful and intact cracked in the kiln holding itself together by 2cm it didn’t snap in half until it was on a flight to Jeddah. All I do now is track inconveniences from commercial invoices, dhl receipts and condition reports
Return the slab is a story of my purchasing habits, luck, speculative archeology

Street cats is an on going series of portraitures of street cats I encounter within my daily commute. &#38;nbsp;

Lil Brancusi is an ode to Brancusi’s “The Kiss”

 In this rendition, here the kiss isn't seen without his counterpart, he is alone, in neglect, his stance in patience his hands behind his back and in pain with a single tear from his left eye. We finally get to see the face.

 Sometimes he is found facing a white wall, depicting a kiss to the white cube he worships and hopes to be recognized

In many situations, Lil Brancusi speaks about the pursuit of love, the pursuit of validation, loneliness and references.

Depicting an elevator wall the graphite drawing highlight’s the (un)conscious behaviors that beget the layered scratches and marks in an oft-overlooked space. The scratches on the metal sheet flow rhythmically — routed in the idea of the abstract — with gestures of continuous motion reminiscent of American artist Cy Twombly’s Blackboard series. Khalid replicates this motion, leaving scratches on the graphites surface while questioning narratives of life-imitates-art to art-imitates-life.

“Though a ubiquitous feature of green infrastructure across Gulf cities, the date palm’s cultivation, outside of natural oases, requires large amounts of water. Mohamed Khalid’s Flaccid (2020) addresses the hidden ecological cost of growing this de facto national plant by presenting it not as a luxuriant growth but as a series desiccated frond-less stumps. His ceramic sculptures double as kitsch souvenirs—some merely decorative tchotchkes, others functional objects like candelabras and incense burners—suggesting that consumer capitalism may ultimately lie at the root of their loss of vitality.” - Murtaza Vali

Enoc Rock is a miniature ceramic replica of a boulder found outside a local gas station. The letters ‘ENOC’ were painted onto the boulder’s surface by employees of the gas station, transforming it into a pseudo-landmark. The work serves as a souvenir that puts into focus Dubai's instrumentalization of its landscape and over-branded aesthetic.

Failures gestures on to two cogs in society, the human and the machine. Both designed to conform to some role based on being at service to others, is now met at a moment where the machine failed at its only duty — to produce legible receipts highlighting mall visitors parking location — and now the human decided to become an artist that draw receipts. Framed are two gestures of some type of a failure and eventually this conceptualized artwork will fail once more as the receipt will start to fade away.

		<description>Camelephant 🐪🐘 &#38;nbsp;
	“Pink Elephants on Parade” is a hallucinatory 28-second song sequence from the 1941 Walt Disney classic film Dumbo during which elephants sing, dance and at one point, morph into camels.
&#38;nbsp;&#60;img width="3010" height="2158" width_o="3010" height_o="2158" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9ad9ae71d98d9c76e8c9423f455b3a23cf2dcfe200cf23c0052533df3ba37fcd/website.jpg" data-mid="112129591" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9ad9ae71d98d9c76e8c9423f455b3a23cf2dcfe200cf23c0052533df3ba37fcd/website.jpg" /&#62;

Camelephant (working title), explores this moment of exact convergence by attempting to slow down and imagines fictional representations of individuals carrying attributes of duality within the gulf.

The project features two characters—a hybrid camel-elephant and a pigeon-falcon. The project explores the dynamics of deep-rooted assimilation within communities of non-Arab origin in the Gulf through the shapeshifting of tongues, the manipulation of movement, and perceptions of class and its illusions in society.

		<description>Khalid Jauffer (b.1996, Dubai) is an artist who stumbles upon his work whilst grocery shopping, cycling to the park, missing trains, people watching, marketplace surfing and walking home

Working with discarded belongings, documents on noticeboards, dreams of supermarkets, and mistakes. He turns these leftover materials into metaphors to explore feelings of longing, belonging and alienation. His practice takes various forms: portraiture of missing cats, forged handwritings, piles of flowers, chasing of sunsets and recently mudlarking.

He is an alumnus of the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship and Campus Art Dubai 7.0, with previous group shows in Goa, Jeddah and Yorkshire.
 Khalid is pursuing his MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he currently lives and works.
